The Guest Cat

An affecting novel with a simple form and story: a tale told in the first person of a man and his wife who come to love a cat, only to lose it.

A poignant little book that touches on relationships, pets, love, and loss. It speaks of a contemporary concerns; central plot points revolve around transient jobs and transient homes, the insecurity of tenancy and the impossibility of home ownership. It is a novel which is both gentle in form and pace, relaxed, and soft, but also sharp in the aspects of life and loss it discusses. I found it absorbing and affecting, even though it would be difficult to put my finger on exactly why.
