Shiraz Sadness

A few years ago we visited Glover’s vinyard in the South Island. Great was my joy to discover they were making red wines, and not pinot noir. The reds I most enjoy tend to be shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache shiraz, and similar strong, full reds. Finding a Kiwi setup doing something other than expensive and rather mediocre pinot was pretty pleasing.

Alas, it hasn’t worked out in practice. Well, not for the 2001 vintage, anyway. Feeling extravagant I picked up a case. Left it to lie for a little and then tried it. Awful, over-acid, to much tannin. Tried again later. And later. And now it’s reached the point where it’s thinning out and becoming positively watery.

Shame, really.
