Conferences
I'm fortunate in a number of things, and one of them is that my employer is prepared to send me to conferences so I have the opportunity to learn things from smart, funny, and generally amazing people.
(I'm also lucky that there are smart, hard-working people who are prepared to organise conferences like linux.conf.au and Kiwicon; conferences require an enormous amount of work to get right, and in the case of those two conferences, the hard work is mostly done by volunteers.)
As well as letting me learn a lot, it's also let me meet some wonderful people, and let me get on a stage and share my opinions with audiences who were nice enough to come and listen to me.
For my own benefit I like to take notes; I also try to publish as many of these as I can, in the hope they'll be useful to others.
linux.conf.au Notes
I've been able to attend LCA 2010, then 2012 through 2016 (and counting) thanks to the Bank of New Zealand, who have paid my way.

IBM were kind enough to sponsor a trip to their IBM University conference in 2014.
