Courted/L'Hermine

See what you've done, political correctness? I can't take a simple plot point like "man reacts to woman doing her job well by becoming romatically obsessesed" at face value. Instead I end up thinking about it being creepy and inappropriate.

Yes, that's sarcasm. Courted is a good rom-com, but it's hard not to notice that, like many films in the genre, you'd like be aghast at the behaviour of the character in real life if you were on the receiving end of it (looking at you, John Hughes).

The plot is woven around a judge overseeing a court case and becoming involved with a juror (yes, exactly). Sidse Babett Knudsen and Fabrice Luchini are both excellent - and Luchini must be a bit typecast in this sort of thing, by now.

The film does have a lasting place in my heart for making a pivotal plot point in the trial rest on the mysteries of the subjonctive, a topic which bedevils anyone trying to learn French, and more than a few native speakers.
